Bus Route Optimization for Fall 2019

UGA Transportation and Parking Services continuously works in partnership with the UGA Student Government Association (SGA) and other on-campus partners to optimize bus routes and improve safety.

The following optimizations for the 2019-2020 academic year bus routes are the result of these ongoing partnerships. Each approved modification factors in safety, efficiency and/or cost.

All changes are effective August 14, 2019

Affected Routes Include:

Route Optimization 1: East Campus Express and East West

Route Optimization 2: Riverbend / South Milledge

Route Optimization 3: University Village

Route Optimization 4: East West

Route Optimization 5: University Village

Route Optimization 6: Vet Med Route

Route Optimization 1: Improve Service to UGA's Park & Ride Lot

Route Modifications:

Reasons for route optimization:

  • The Park and Ride lot was serviced solely by two buses on the Vet Med route. Recent expansions to the lot have increased parking spaces by 150 creating a need for more bus service to the area.
  • Individuals who parked at the Park and Ride had limited access to North Campus and had to transfer routes to access the main part of campus.

Benefits:

  • The number of buses servicing the route increased from two to six.
  • Riders receive more frequent bus service to / from the Park and Ride lot.
  • Riders now have more route options for accessing more areas of campus without route transfers.

Route Optimization 2: Riverbend / South Milledge

Route Modifications:

  • The Riverbend / South Milledge route will be modified to travel from the greenhouses on South Milledge to the Park and Ride lot and then back again.
  • The route will be serviced by transit vans as opposed to buses to better meet the ridership demand on the route.

Reasons for Route Optimization:

  • Average ridership to the greenhouses is approximately 19 people per day during the Fall and Spring semesters. Replacing the buses with vans and eliminating service to main campus better meets the ridership needs on the route and provides significant cost savings which helps keep fees low.

Benefits:

  • The service changes more appropriately serve riders traveling to and from the greenhouses while also reducing costs.

Route Optimization 3: Reduce Redundant Stops on the University Village Route

Route Modifications:

  • UGA buses will no longer service the Studio 51 stop on East Campus Road.
  • UGA buses will no longer service the Carousel bus stop on Milledge Extension.
  • The bus stop at University Village's building R will relocate to building Q.

Reasons for Route Optimization:

  • The Studio 51 stop on East Campus Road had low ridership, is a non-university property, and impeded the flow of traffic on Milledge Extension.
  • The Carousel stop on Milledge Extension is a non-university property with multiple stops in close proximity.
  • Having multiple stops close together on a single route interrupts the flow of traffic and negatively impacts the efficiency of service.

Benefits:

  • Improved service to university properties.
  • Having stops spaced further apart allows for more efficient transit service.
The University Village route will no longer serve the Studio 51 or Carousel stops, which are marked with an X. The bus stop at University Village's building R will relocate to building Q, which is marked by the arrow.

Route Optimization 4: Improve Pedestrian Safety and Add Parking at Intramural Fields

Route Modifications:

  • The first stop in the Intramural Fields parking lot will relocate to the curb between the maintenance building and batting cages.

Reason for Route Optimization:

  • The stop is relocating to avoid a hazardous area in the middle of the parking lot thereby improving safety for pedestrians and vehicles.

Benefits:

  • Improvement of safety in the area for pedestrians and vehicles.
  • A number of parking spaces will be added back to the lot by eliminating the two areas currently designated as the turn radius for the buses.
The first bus stop at the Intramural Fields, which is marked by an X, has been relocated to the curb near the maintenance building and the batting cages, which is marked by a square. The other bus stops at the Intramural Fields will remain in their previous locations.

Route Optimization 5: Eliminate the Health Center Bus Stop on East Campus Road

Route Modifications:

  • For safety reasons, UGA buses will no longer service the Health Center stop on East Campus Road.

Reason for Route Optimization:

  • Passengers are crossing 5 busy lanes of traffic from the University Village area, without using a crosswalk, to get to and from this bus stop. In addition, the speed limit is 40 MPH and cars passing the bus cannot see the passengers crossing the road.

Benefits:

  • Passengers from the University Village area can more safely access the North South route at Buildings F or G and have almost the identical service through campus.
UGA buses will no longer service the Health Center stop on East Campus Road, which is marked by an X. Passengers in this area should board the North South route near Buildings F and G.

Route Optimization 6: Vet Med Route

Route Modifications:

  • An on-demand stop has been added across the street from the Poultry Diagnostic & Research Center on the outbound Vet Med route.

Reason for Route Optimization:

  • The addition of a cross-walk on College Station road provides individuals needing to access the Poultry Diagnostic & Research Center safer access to the facility, allowing buses to stop when needed.

Benefits:

  • Individuals needing to access the Poultry Diagnostic & Research Center may now request an on-demand stop at the designated pedestrian cross-walk.
