New Bus Routes Focus on Safety, Support, and Efficiencies

To UGA students, faculty, and staff who ride our buses: We have missed you and look forward to seeing you on campus again soon. Please know that our bus routes will look a little different when you return, and we understand this will be an adjustment for many riders. Over the past several months, we have worked with the Student Government Association (SGA) to evaluate and optimize campus bus routes for the Fall semester. Student feedback, data collection, SGA surveys, and circumstances such as construction projects are a large part of the normal evaluation and planning process for any bus route changes. This year, the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak is presenting additional challenges to bus service. To ensure the safety of all passengers by keeping crowding to a minimum, Transportation and Parking Services is following guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Federal Transit Administration (FTA) on reduced occupancy on buses (ex. 18-20 people per bus). Many routes have been shortened to provide quicker and more frequent service through campus which helps offset reduced occupancy. We also worked with SGA to eliminate redundancies to allow more transit support in areas with higher ridership demand, to maximize the distance electric buses can operate per day, and to update the naming convention for all bus routes.

Our team members are here to help you with your transportation needs as you return to campus. If you have any questions as you navigate the new routes or want to learn more about alternative transportation options such as walking and biking, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

Read SGA’s statement on route changes here.

Benefits of these route optimizations include:

  • Eliminating redundancies to allow more transit support in areas with higher ridership demand
  • Shortening bus routes to ensure buses get through campus more quickly
  • Maximizing the distance electric buses can operate per day resulting in increases in efficiencies and zero-emission transportation
  • Reduction in miles for buses overall to about 240 miles per day
  • Reduction of 5.5 metric tons of Co2 (37%)
    • Previous routes were estimated at 14.6 metric tons per day
    • New routes are estimated at 9.1 metric tons per day
    • Based on 17-18 electric buses on at all times

Alternative Transportation Options

In addition to buses, biking and walking are great ways to get around campus. You can quickly find walking routes by using the campus map on the UGA App or on our 360° virtual tour of campus.

Information by Route

The following optimizations for the 2020-2021 academic year weekday bus routes factor in safety, support, and efficiencies. Click each route map to enlarge the image. An interactive map is coming soon.

UGA bus routes are subject to change based on campus need. Live track the bus for the most accurate real-time route information. Please note you may need to update the UGA app once routes are in effect to see changes. Limited bus service is provided during university holidays, Maymester, and Summer sessions. Regular UGA bus service does not run during home football games or when the university is closed.
